Media Markt, the number one consumer electronics German retailer, added another component to its multichannel strategy this January with the official launch of their online shop. This step represents the dawning of a new era for Media Markt. Horst Norberg, CEO of Media-Saturn-Holding GmbH hopes to expand their strength in fixed-location retailing by making the online/offline dual shopping presence at Media Markt more attractive than ever.
Media Markt and its sister company Saturn make up Media Saturn Holding, which belongs to the Group Metro. The Media-Saturn Group maintains a clear two-retail-brand strategy: they each have their own separate management structures and compete with each other, giving the business model great flexibility and allowing customers to consistently shop the best offers. For over 20 years Media Markt and Saturn have been enjoying dynamic growth in the international arena, made possible by a decentralized sales concept which can be tailored to local, regional and national needs, tastes and circumstances. Today, over half of the corporate group’s total revenue is generated outside Germany.
Media Markt and Saturn continue to enjoy steady growth and have become the leading consumer electronics retailers in Europe. In 2011, the corporate group opened eight new stores in Germany alone. Today, there are approximately 900 Media Markt and Saturn stores in 16 countries, which generated net sales of 20.6 billion Euros in 2011. The corporate group has a current headcount of approx. 70,000 with over 2,000 employed at the group’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.
