The past decade has seen more than its fair share of natural disasters, testing both the mettle of the aid organisations and the commitment of the international real estate industry.

In the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster, such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, the first priority is to save lives and provide humanitarian aid.

At this stage, built-environment professionals – real estate agents among them – can help by, for example, assessing the extent of the damage.

But it is when the immediate crisis is over and the reconstruction begins that input from the property and construction sector can prove most value to those affected.
