The EU launched its European Green Capital scheme in 2008 in the midst of a dramatic slowdown in development. But cities must continue to meet their commitments for carbon reduction – and they are looking to buildings to be a major contributor.
The European Green Capital Award, which recognises exemplary eco achievement and ambition, is open to all cities with populations of over 200,000. The first round of competitive bidding led to Stockholm becoming European Green Capital in 2010. This year, the honour goes to Hamburg.
