MIPIM Asia 2011 - Daily Bulletin day#0 - Green light for MIPIM Asia

Today at MIPIM Asia 2011 was all about preparations before the show opens in earnest tomorrow morning.

The main hall of the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre was a hive of activity, with dextrous workmen and women putting the finishing touches to their stands. Elsewhere, in hotel rooms across the city, speakers such as Robert Ciemniak and Prof. Yiping Huang were readying their final scripts for delivery, while back at the centre, against a backdrop of Hong Kong harbour and distant Kowloon, the registration people were shifting their webcams into the right position, ready to snap the attendees for their badges and lanyards. Meanwhile, ensconced in an upstairs room, the show’s media team spent a good few hours making sure that everything worked – WiFi, video streaming, laptops, photography and, most importantly, how and where to get the coffee for the troops. This last point is still not settled.

Still, there is plenty to look forward to. Major conference sessions will focus on subjects including investment, cities, REITS, retail and sustainability. This year’s show will feature 71 stands and representatives from 740 companies from 40 countries across the globe: from China to Russia, Malaysia to Taiwan, Korea to the Ukraine. But an early contender for stand of the show is already emerging. (Green) hats off to the Hong Kong Green Building Council and Urban Renewal Authority, whose stand was being bedecked with all manner of potted plants, foliage and real soil and turf to get across its environmental message. HKGBC ‘engages community, industry and government to create practical solutions for Hong Kong’s unique, subtropical built environment’, so they are in the right place.

On with the show…
