Organised by LSE Cities and hosted at the London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society, the 11th Urban Age conference was held on the 6th and 7th December 2012.[i] The conference focused on the theme of the ‘Electric City’ – a: ‘detailed investigation of how the combined forces of technological innovation and the global environmental crisis are affecting urban society.’[ii]

The ‘invitation-only’ two-day event was supported by the Mayor of London and attended by an audience of around 350, which heard presentations by over 60 speakers from cities and institutions across Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Europe.[iii]

Amongst others, the speakers and facilitators included: Ricky Burdett – Professor of Urban Studies and Director of LSE Cities; Saskia Sassen – Professor of Sociology and Co-Chair of the Committee of Global Thought at Colombia University; David Willetts MP – Minister of State for Universities and Science for the UK Government; Geoff Mulgan – Chief Executive of NESTA; and Tony Travers – Director of British Government at LSE and Director of LSE London.[iv]

The conference explored themes that connected technology, the environment and cities. Specifically, speakers were asked to: ‘tackle the social dimension of technological change, addressing questions of adaptation and change in individual and collective behaviour.’[v]

The overall aim of the event – and the research agenda leading up to it – was to provide fresh insights to policy-makers and practitioners about how cities should respond to environmental and economic challenges through effective socio-technological transition.[vi]
