While masterminds were reinventing Europe, experts addressed investment into various regions, and global city officials discussed sustainability & confronted the housing crisis.
After a fantastic Opening Party last night, it was clear that some delegates were rising slowly to a bright sunny sky. For others, MIPIM began at the crack of dawn for the 5.5 kilometer GDF Suez Charity Race along the Croisette. To welcome the runners in and award them in a prize giving ceremony was France’s former World 400 meters hurdles champion, Stephane Diagana.
Mayors and city officials met behind closed doors for the 6th annual Mayor’s Think Tank to discuss sustainable urban development and how to make the most of urban resources. The discussion continued later on in the day on another but related hot topic: Increasing Housing Supply. The consensus was unilateral – public and private need to continue working together to create more supply at more affordable costs. How to approach this however, is trickier depending on what policies are in place.
Investment was once again a major theme during the day. While a panel on German Residential Investment spoke about the shift towards Tier 2 cities, the session on Investment into the USA raised interesting questions about attractive cities to invest in and most profitable markets. The Nordic countries also boasted promising investment opportunities.
Over in the MIPIM Innovation Forum, expert led panels discussed the changing commercial real estate needs, as workplace trends are developing to meet a more mobile, tech savvy and frugal end user.
Outside the Palais, the Croisette was humming with good spirits – and no, not the type of “spirits” found in the UK behind the bar – the kind of spirit that had delegates more optimistic than ever. Check out what these two participants had to say about the event thus far, and how the positive mood was reflective of optimism in the market.
For a little bit of fun, I asked participants to send in photos of their stands on twitter via #mipimstands. The best pic gets published in the Daily News. Well, unfortunately, the segment got cut due to not enough space, so I decided to make a selection and post them on the Blog. Check them out here!
Tomorrow is yet another big day. Perhaps the biggest yet! We have the Big Debate at 10:00 in the Grand Auditorium, the Mastermind Architects Panel immediately following in the Innovation Forum. To top it all off- the MIPIM Awards Ceremony in the evening. So, rest up tonight…you’re going to need a full battery for tomorrow!
