Development in Chinese retail sector lies in 3 and 4 tier cities

Leaders from the Chinese retail sector met in Shanghai this week to discuss growing trends, current challenges and future development plans. For retailers looking to grow their brand in China, direct investment with local partners is the way to go as the franchise model is growing riskier, says Chris Igwe of CBRE. Research also suggests that the Chinese population will not travel more than 30 minutes to get to a shopping centre, which helps bolster the claim that the e-commerce cake is growing bigger and bigger. Retail development will grow in 3 and 4 tier cities with developer giant WANDA planning to build up to 55 new plaza centres in the next year or so.
