Retailer of Week: Cigierre


This week, all eyes are on Cigierre, the leader in the Italian causal dining industry. The company specialises in catering within malls and multiplex cinemas. It owns the brands Old Wild West, Wiener Haus, Arabian Kebab and Kukkuma. Its network of 130 directly owned or franchised restaurants generates over € 150 million in total sales.

Founded in 1995 in Udine,  a city in northeastern Italy, Cigierre immediately seized the opportunity to explore innovative formatsmulti-ethnic thematic restaurants with traditional food implanted in malls and cinemas. The first Cigierre restaurant was opened in one of Udine’s Malls with a tremendous success.

All Cigierre’s brands represent ethnic restaurants with unique style, design and atmosphere. For instance, in 2002, they opened Old Wild West near a cinema theatre to attract customers willing to have meal before or just after the film screening. This fast food restaurant was completely different from others of this kind thanks to its décor and served high-quality beer and grilled steak. Another Cigierre’s restaurant formats: Wiener Haus (it serves great beer and delicious traditional food from Central Europe), Arabian Kebab (fast food based on quality Mediterranean cuisine) and Kukkuma Café where you can order espresso or coffee.

 Expansion Plans

The company will attend MAPIC in November seeking to develop their chain in Italy and abroad by integrating their thematic restaurants in European cities’ entertainment areas and shopping malls. Their concept – tasty traditional food, original decors and an easy-to-adapt franchising business model – will definitely seduce other MAPIC’s attendees. Cigierre claims to provide their franchisees with continuing training, and pre- and post-opening support.
